Seanie Monaghan in line to appear on Pacquiao-Vargas undercard

Irish-American light heavyweight contender Seanie Monaghan [27(17)-0] looks likely to be added to the Manny Pacquiao comeback card.

The Pac-Man challenges for Jessie Vargas’s WBO welterweight title at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on November 5th, and fellow Top Rank boxer Monaghan is a near-certainty to appear on the card.

Carl Moretti, Vice-President of Top Rank yesterday told The Ring Magazine that Irish Seanie will feature on the show, the broadcasting details of which are still unconfirmed.

35 year old Monaghan has not fought since his fifth round stoppage over Janne Forsman in February, and recently seemed close to a fight with the pound-for-pound rated Andre Ward, but it proved to be something of a cruel false flag.

In the intervening months, Monaghan has perhaps been overtaken as the number one Irish-American light heavy following Joe Smith Jr’s stunning first round knockout over Andrzej Fonfara. In November however, a big fight is planned for the boxer of Navan descent ahead of a potential showdown with Smith Jr next year in New York.

Regarding his upcoming opponent, Monaghan’s manager PJ Kavanagh promised The Ring that “it would be a good challenge, a great fight for Sean, definitely a step up,”

“It would be a tough opponent.”
