RTÉ reveal Olympic Boxing panel

RTÉ have today announced their broadcast team for the upcoming Rio Olympics.

Once again the Irish boxers are expected to be the main medal hopes for the Games, and there will be a six-strong panel covering the exploits of the eight boxers qualified.

In the commentary box the action will be described by the legendary ‘Memory Man’ Jimmy Magee who will be covering an amazing thirteenth consecutive Summer Games. Magee will be ably assisted in the commentary box by 2010 European bronze medalist and current pro prospect Eric Donovan.

On the couch in the Montrose studios there will be expert analysis provided by Bernard Dunne, Michael Carruth, Mick Dowling, and Kelly Harrington.

Carruth is the last Irish male boxer to win gold in the Olympics, topping the light welterweight podium at the 1992 Games in Barcelona – although he will be hoping that another Irishman takes this honour next month.

Dunne is a former WBA super bantamweight World champion and led the resurgence of the sport on the channel in the late 2000s.

Dowling is a two-time Olympian, reaching the quarter finals in Mexico City (1968) and Munich (1972) as well as claiming two European bronze medals.

Harrington recently won silver at the World Championships in Kazakhstan in the light welterweight category, a weight class sadly not included in the Olympics as of yet.

One man who wont be on the couch however is former panelist and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Kenny Egan.

Boxing begins at the Riocentro on August 6th.

Ireland will be represented by Joe Ward, Michael O’Reilly, Steven Donnelly, Katie Taylor, David Oliver Joyce, Michael Conlan, Brendan Irvine, and Paddy Barnes.
