Record Breakers – European School boy/girl championships medal haul increased to 18

Irish boxing is guaranteed a record-breaking 18 medals at the 2019 European Schoolboy/girl Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Irish male captain Roy Colgan, Laurence Connors, Michael McCarthy and Caolan Devlin joined their compatriots in Friday’s semi-finals following another hectic day of action for Ireland’s athletes, coaches and staff with 23 Irish boxers between the ropes over the last 24 hours in the Georgian capital.

Colgan recorded a convincing win over Tom Odlozik of the Czech Republic in the 43kg class and Devlin was always in control versus Azeri middleweight Islam Huseynli.

McCarthy finished off the day on a winning note in a lively Celtic derby with Scotland’s Cian Govan. The Irish light-welter was giving away considerable height and reach advantage but sealed the win after forcing Givan into a count in the last frame.

Earlier, Connors impressed en route to chalking up Ireland’s first victory of the afternoon on a split decision over Dutch bantam Sven Cuppen.

Kai Griffin, Kyle Smith, Blaine Fitzgerald, James O’Reilly, Cole Byrne, Patrick Stokes and Patrick Stapleton lost out today.

Three of those calls – Griffin, Smith and Stapleton – were on 3-2 splits and could have gone either way.

Thursday is a competitive rest day in Tbilisi with the semi-finals slated for Friday. The finals will be decided on Saturday and Sunday.

The Irish squad will have a training session tomorrow ahead of Friday’s contests for places – and  guaranteed silver – in the weekend’s finals.

Team managers Stephen Connolly and Jennifer O’Sullivan praised the performances of the entire squad and coaching staff today and remarked the team will take a lot of confidence from performances so far going into another massive European weekend for Irish boxing.
