‘A real danger for any lightweight’ – Carl Frampton the latest to praise ‘Tenny’s’ power

Carl Frampton is the latest boxing aficionado to praise the power of James Tennyson and endorse the notion ‘The Assassin’ is a massive lightweight danger.

Recent world title challenger, Tennyson, confirmed his status as one of Irish boxing’s pound for pound biggest punchers with a highlight reel stoppage of Atif Shafiq on the massive Vasyl Lomachenko versus Luke Campbell card just over a week ago.

The victory, the 26-year-old’s 21st inside the distance, secured the Belfast fighter the WBC International ranking title, which should help secure him a world ranking.

The former European champion, Commonwealth and two time Irish champion, who lost to Tevin Farmer in an IBF super featherweight world title fight, doesn’t look set for an immediate return to world level.

Rather he is targeting the British title and will fight former Stephen Ormond foe Craig Evans in a final eliminator for the Lonsdale belt late October early November.

However, if he does manage to get back level ‘The Jackal’ believes he can prove a handful for anyone.

Frampton was working for the BBC at Loma Campbell card took in the Tennyson fight and echoed Eddie Hearn’s ‘major problem’ ‘serious power’ sentiments post the win.

Speaking in his popular Sunday Life column the fighter who is said to be fighting former world champion Isaac Dogboe in late November said:

“James Tennyson blasted his way back into contention for a chance to move back into the big time with his WBA Interantional lightweight title win over Atiff Shafiq at the O2 Arena.

“Tennyson won in great fashion with a second round knockout and it’s clear to me that lightweight is the division he should be at. He’s a serious puncher and a real danger for any lightweight.”

Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn was equally impressed.

James is a huge puncher,” Hearn told the Sky Cameras directly after the fight.

“Everyone knows at super featherweight he was huge for the weight. He struggled at times in the big fights and when he moved up to world level against Tevin Farmer he just didn’t have enough in the tank.

“At lightweight I think he is going to be a major problem, major problem. He is not afraid to step into any kind of big fight and that’s dangerous in itself.”
