Plenty of Turkey planned for Wee Rooster

Brendan Irvine joked that he is looking forward to two helpings of Turkey following his win at the National Elite Championships on Friday.

The 19 year old defeated TJ Waite in the flyweight final and is now planning a hearty Christmas dinner as well as a trip to Istanbul and the Olympic qualifiers.

Speaking after his win, the St Paul’s ABC fighter noted that “it’s a good achievement for me and my club.”

“It’s only my club’s second Irish Senior title, so it’s been unbelievable for me to get it for them”

On his victory over the elusive and slippery Waite, Irvine explained how “I just tried to stay relaxed.”

“Make sure I was attacking and make sure I was landing that’s what the gameplan was.”

Now Irvine, who has a busy first year as an Elite Irish international, is looking forward to the festive period, admitting that “I can’t wait, just to relax and enjoy Christmas.”

“It’s been a serious season for me, I haven’t stopped.”

“It’s been a long year but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

The youngster also took a mature approach to next year’s qualifiers, reasoning that “I’ll just take it step by step and if it’s there it’s there – if not, I’m still young, I just have to see what path is open.”
