‘Pissed off’ Paddy Gallagher suggests Jenkins is one of ‘luckiest’ British champs in history

Paddy Gallagher [16(10)-6(0)] is ‘pissed off’ his appeal against the Chris Jenkins [21(8)-3(0)-2] decision was ‘disregarded’ by the British Boxing Board of Control.

‘The Pat Man’ was on the wrong end of a controversial technical decision when he challenged the Welsh fighter for his British and Commonwealth titles on the massive Feile an Phobail card in August.

The Belfast welter lost on points after the clash was stopped in round 9 because of cuts deemed ‘severe lacerations due to unintentional fouls’ by Gallagher, by the referee. Not only did Gallagher feel he had enough rounds in the bag at that point to win the clash, it’s been strongly argued since that both cuts were caused by punches.

Team Gallagher registered an appeal with the BBBofC, but when the Board’s most recent circular confirmed the champion will defend his title against Liam Taylor on a Frank Warren show in November, the 30-year-old got confirmation he wasn’t going to be afforded an immediate rematch.

It’s refueled anger in the usually extremely jovial welter – and he claims if Jenkins is to go on and win the title outright he will be one of the luckiest ever to do so.

“I’m obviously pissed off about it,” Gallagher told Irish-Boxing.com.

“I still have people coming up to me and talking about it. It’s nice to get the support but each time I hear it, it makes it clearer, I should have won.”

“I’m over it as such, I’d need to be as the British board got the appeal and have just swooped it to the side and disregarded it. Still  Jenkins said Taylor is an easy fight, so he will be straight in there happy with that – and if goes on to keep the title he will be one of the luckiest outright winners of the British title in history.”#

The Gleann BC operator would love a repeat, but feels it unlikely. However, if he was to get another shot at the Welsh fighter and his titles he is adamant the judges or referee wouldn’t be able to deny him again,

“I’ve said if I get a rematch I’ll knock him out proper next time. Fuck that judges and referee shite. If I was to get a fight with him again I would have to get myself in the mandatory position. I won’t get one because of what happened in the first fight,” he adds before revealing there is still something to look forward too.

“I’ll get another fight before Christmas and MTK are working on a title fight, so lets see how things go.”

Gallagher has recently been joined in the gym by the likes of Conrad Cummings and Lewis Crocker and is happy to see Gerard McManus and Daniel Anderson’s camp grow.

“It’s class that there is such a good team in the gym now, plenty of good sparring and plenty to work off eachother.”
