BEWARE: ‘Pink Tyson’ is coming for Katie Taylor

The coach of the self-styled ‘Pink Tyson’ claims that his fighter is coming for Ireland’s WBA-IBF-WBO lightweight champion Katie Taylor.

Johnny Edwards made the laughable claim ahead of Kallia Kourouni‘s return to the ring.

The Greek super-featherweight is in action on Saturday April 20th in a six-rounder at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre.

It will be Kourouni’s first fight since her loss to durable journeywoman Kristine Shergold and it’s doubtful that Edwards truly believes his claims.

“Kallia wants to challenge the big names and that is when we will see the best of her,” coach Edwards stated.

“We need to have a couple more and then look to mix it with girls like Katie Taylor and Chantelle Cameron if the offer is right.

“Kallia has a very busy style and with Katie Taylor’s in-and-out boxing, that would make for an attractive fight,” added the attention-seeking coach.

Kouroni [9(2)-2(0)-1] struggled badly against the same Bojana Libiszewska defeated by Siobhan O’Leary last week, arguably losing over ten rounds, and has also been dominated by beaten Taylor foe Viviane Obenauf.

The Athens southpaw had ‘called out’ Taylor ahead of her UK debut versus Libiszewska back in 2017 but soon turned into a boxing punchline.

Her fight with the journeywoman Pole at the Tolworth Recreation Centre, a defence of her lightly regarded WIBF belt, was overshadowed by the poor quality of production and performance.

While Team Taylor are keen for other fighters to “do their bit” and look to build their profiles ahead of potential megafights, it is doubtful they had Kouroni in mind when saying this.

Taylor will hopefully seek to become undisputed lightweight world champion on June 1st if an agreement is reached with WBC titlist Delfine Persoon.

Seven-weight world champion Amanda Serrano will follow if Persoon is accounted for on the Joshua-Miller undercard before, going by the much-publicised plan, a light welterweight fight with undisputed welterweight ruler Cecilia Braekhus.

Beyond that there are big fights to be made with former top amateurs Estelle Mossely and Mikaela Mayer, cross-codes encounters with Holly Holm and Cris Cyborg, and maybe a fight with Kouroni if she can transform herself into a good boxer.

What would look to be a much better fight, however, would be a clash between ‘Pink Tyson’ Kouroni and Siobhán O’Leary, a fighter with actual knockout power.
