Paul Hyland Jr answers Gearoid Clancy’s call
Belfast lightweight Paul Hyland Jr [13(4)-0] has responded positively to Gearoid Clancy‘s call for an Irish title fight.
In response, Hyland has confirmed that he would be “delighted” to face the Oughterard boxer for the Irish title last held by Cavan’s Andy Murray back in 2010.
In a message sent to Irish-Boxing.com the crowd-pleasing 135lber described how “I’d be more than delighted to fight you [Clancy] for the Irish lightweight title.”
“Get your manager to get in contact with my manager, Mark Dunlop, and we’ll get it made for next year some time.
Upon inspection of the BUI rankings, a clash between Clancy (#6) and Hyland (#3) seems a logical move. The #1-ranked Stephen Ormond has moved to light welterweight, while #2 Jamie Kavanagh is currently recovering from a career-saving eye operation. MHD Promotions have already been in negotiations with #4-ranked Michael Devine, but talks with the Luton boxer stalled and ‘Chunky’ now fights for the BBBoC Southern Area strap in December. The remaining fighters in the ladder, Joe Fitzpatrick (#5) and Feargal McCrory (#7), are currently ineligible due to the lack of a scheduled eight-rounder on their records.
The match-up is being eyed for the February 4th MHD Promotions card at the Europa Hotel.
In the meantime, both Clancy and Hyland intend to fight before year’s end. 26 year old Hyland is slated to appear on the Christina McMahon World title undercard at the National Stadium on December 3rd, while 32 year old Clancy looks set to support Darragh Foley at Luna Park the day beforehand.
