Paddy Donovan – “Whatever happens, happens”

There are two sides to Paddy Donovan.

On the one hand, the Limerick lightweight is the messer of the Irish team competing at the World Youth Championships next week, the self-appointed ‘Gypsy King,’ always bouncing around laughing and joking.

However, when it comes to boxing, the OLOL southpaw is intensely focused, deadly serious, and hugely talented.

An eight-time all-Ireland champion, Donovan heads to the tournament in Russia as one of the younger participants. Barring any rule changes, the 17 year old will be still eligible for Youth level next year and he believes that this allows him to enter the championships in St Petersburg with absolutely zero pressure.

2015 World Junior silver medalist Donovan spoke to Irish-Boxing.com and described how “there’s no pressure, I’m the year younger, so whatever happens, happens. I’m going over here for experience.”

The Munster teen has long term boxing plans and wont be overawed by the occassion in Russia. Donovan views the upcoming Worlds as a step on his journey to become the #1 fighter on the island at whatever weight he ends up at, and he explained that “these championships, we’re building all around them for the Senior [Elite] Championships, our aim is to win the Senior title. If we do well over here, we do well. Our aim is to win gold.”
