Ormond can’t wait to fight in front of passionate Frampton fans

STEPHEN Ormond sat ringside nigh on in awe as 9000 Carl Frampton fans raised the roof in support of The Belfast fighter in the Odyssey Arena last year. Now Dublin lightweight can’t wait to sample the unique atmosphere of a ‘Jackal’ fight night from the other side of the ropes.

The popular and unassuming Dubliner returns to the ring for the first time since beating well known and respected puncher Derry Matthews on the ‘This is Belfast’ card on April 4 and can’t wait to fight in front of the most partisan crowd in Irish sport.

Ormond, who defends his WBO European title against Karim El Ouazghari on a bill that also includes Marc McCullough, Jamie Conlan and Conrad Cummings, is keen to impress the Belfast fight fans, but also hopes to emulate Frampton by bringing big fight nights to his hometown and by moving into world title contention in 2014.

“I am delighted to be on the Frampton card. Big time! Carl is a lovely fella and a great fighter. I went to watch him fight in the Odyssey last year and the atmosphere was unbelievable. I can’t wait to fight in front of a crowd like that. They really got behind him and the atmosphere was electric. It is exciting to be fighting on that bill and live on BoxNation again,” Ormond told Irish-boxing.com.

“I believe I need a couple more fights and then I want a world title. I am delighted to be on Carls bills, but hopefully I can get a big show in Dublin too. I think the time is right. In terms of boxing I just want to get busy and move toward a world title, but it would be great to have some big fights in Dublin too.”

Ormond was speaking at the successful NoWhere2Hyde fight night last month where he picked up the BUI Irish Fighter of the Year Award. He expressed his delight his achievements for 2013 were recognised and felt it fitting he was presented his award in the National Stadium.

“It was great to get the award. Carl (Frampton) won a similar award last year and look where he is now. It is also special to get it in The Stadium. That makes it that more special to be presented with it in front of the people who watched me come through the ranks as an amateur.”
