Ormond: If I beat Flanagan and Warren has to get me a World title shot

STEPHEN Ormond is a do your talking in the ring kind of fighter. The WBO European champion has never been heard calling out potential foes or even goading or belittling future opponents.

So it isn’t a surprise to hear the Dubliner express frustration that their has been more words than actions in terms of big fights of late. The Celtic Warrior Gym lightweight thought after defeating Derry Matthews in Liverpool last December 2014 was going to the year he secured a World title fight.

However, the fighter, who is currently scheduled to fight British Champion Terry Flanagan in London on November 24, has fought once since a win that most believed would prove ‘breakthrough’, stopping Karim El Ouazghari in Belfast in April.

It is something that has rankled the 31 year old and is adamant if he beats Flanagan promoter Frank Warren will have no choice but to push him toward a World title fight.

“There are great fights out there for me and I am good enough to beat the top fighters at this weight, but I am sick of talking about it now. I want to get in there and do it. I need the opportunity and when it comes i will take it,” Ormond told Irish-boxing.com.

Some fans have been suggesting that Warren see’s Ormond as a name to feed his UK based fighters rather than a fighter he wants to push to the top.

The Pascal Collins trained fighter isn’t one to moan or talk out of school, but when pushed on if having to travel to fight other Warren promoted fighters was frustrating he did indicate he felt a lack of promotion love on occasion.

However, in typical Ormond style he stresses the only way to deal with that is to keep winning.

“Sometimes I don’t feel like a get the backing I deserve. I have to do it the hard way fighting away from home and fighting people from the same promotional stable. I think I should have fought for a World title already, but there is no point in moaning about. If I keep winning the World title shot will come.

“We made sure (when negotiation) victory in this fight and it is a title shot. It has to be. I understand I have to travel sometimes and go were the ticket sellers are if promoting a show in Dublin wasn’t an option for Warren, but now its my time and I want a World title.”
