O’Reilly makes it through in Baku

Portlaoise middleweight Michael O’Reilly has progressed to the Last 16 in European Games in Baku. The 22 year old outclassed Croatia’s Sanjin Pol Vrgoc in their Round of 32 clash, winning via unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 30-25).

He is the fourth Irish fighter, so far, to win their opening bout along with Myles Casey, Adam Nolan, and Darren O’Neill.

Winner of a silver medal in the 2011 European Youth Championships, O’Reilly was an outstanding underage talent and has progressed well onto the senior scene – defeating Darren O’Neill in the 2014 Elite Nationals and later winning a silver medal at the European Union Championships. O’Reilly is targetting a medal in Azerbaijan and is definitely one to watch.

O’Reilly will now fight Emir Sabotic of Montenegro in the Last 16 on (11:15 Irish time).
