Olympic and Youth Olympic managers confirmed

Joe Hennigan and Stephen Connolly have been named as Irish team managers for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

The Youth Olympics begin in Nanjing, China on August 16th. Mayo’s Ciara Ginty, Cork’s Christina Desmond and Donegal’s Michael Gallagher will line out for Ireland in the boxing event at the Games.

62 Youth Boxers (50 Men and 12 Women) who will qualify through the AIBA Youth World Boxing Sofia 2014 will compete in the second edition of the Youth Olympic Games.Youth Men will compete in ten weight categories: 46kg-49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg, 91kg, 91+kg.Youth Women will compete in three weight categories: 48-51kg, 57-60kg, 69-75k.
The first qualifier for male boxers for Rio 2016 will be the 2015 World Elite Championships in Qatar, while the female boxers will be the 2016 World Elite Championships at the host country to be confirmed.

There will be further Olympic European qualifiers – and qualifiers for WSB and APB boxers – for males and females after both World Championships.

Joe Hennigan has worked as Irish team manager on 25 occasions, including the 2013 European Elite Championships in Minsk, Belarus where Ireland won two gold and two silver medals.

Stephen Connolly has also worked as Irish team manager in the past and was with the Irish delegation the 2010 AIBA World Women’s Championships in Barbados where Katie Taylor won her third successive title.
