Olympians Nolan and O’Neill two of the victors on National Elite semi final night

London 2012 Olympians Adam Nolan and Darren O’Neill both won their semi-finals at the National Elite Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium tonight.
Nolan beat Fergal Redmond on a unanimous verdict to move to within one win of his fourth successive welterweight crown.
And O’Neill, who captained the Irish team at the London 2012 Olympics, recorded an inside the distance win over Limerick’s Derek Duhig and is one victory away from his fifth non-consecutive title.
Nolan will meet Stephen Donnelly, who edged out Beijing 2008 Olympian John Joe Joyce on a split decision tonight, in the 69kg final, and O’Neill is slated go head-to-head with Christy Joyce for the middleweight belt.
Matthew Tinker, who boxes out of the St Francis BC in Limerick, saw off Donal Ward to set up Friday’s light-heavy decider with three-time AIBA World Elite, Youth and Junior medallist Joe Ward, who is targeting his fourth successive Elite belt before his 21st birthday.
Five-time Elite champion Con Sheehan missed the 2013 Championships through injury, but the Clonmel BC man returned to winning ways at the Stadium tonight at the expense of Niall Kennedy on a split decision.
Sheehan will now go head-to-head with his Conmel BC team-mate Dean Gardiner for the super-heavy title. Gardiner beat Joe Joyce on a split decision this evening.
Claire Grace, Laoise Traynor, in the first half of a Bray BC welterweight double, and Fionna Nelson also won tonight to complete the women’s finals line up for next Saturday.
The men’s Elite finals will be decided next Friday, March 7th. The women’s finals will be held on March 8th.
Tickets for finals night are now on sale from the National Stadium office. Ring (01) 454 3525 from Monday (office hours).
