Niall Kennedy secures new fight date- heavyweight returns next month

Niall Kennedy [13(8)-0-1] has secured another American fight date.

The Wexford heavyweight will return on a Murphy’s Boxing card next month.

The Pascal Collins trained big man will face a yet to be confirmed opponent on August 17 at MGM Springfield, Massachusetts, on a card expected to be topped by NABA light heavyweight champion Charles Foster.

The bout will be the boxing Garda’s second of the year and follows his St Patrick’s Day win over Michael Marrone.

It’s ‘Boom Boom’s’ twelfth fight Stateside and he will be hopeful of securing an opponent that can help him make a statement in an increasingly reinvigorated heavyweight division.

The Gorey fighter had agreed to take an away corner chance on the big Matchroom USA bill at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia on March 17 where he would face unbeaten home favourite Darmani Rock [14(9)-0].

The Gorey Garda had committed to fighting the giant former World Youth Championships gold medallist but, more than half-way through camp, things would fall apart.

There is no doubt he will be hoping next months opponent could be a similar springboard name.

Speaking after securing a routine win after the Rock disappointment last March the 34 year old said,  “our plan is… we really want high-level lads, good names, unbeaten prospects.”

“The likes of Alexis Santos is in the past, we want people that are going to push us on.

“We want to be in Top 20 by the end of 2019. I’ve trust in my company [Murphys Boxing], I’ve trust in Packie [Collins], we’re working hard to make sure it gets there.”

Such is the extent of Kennedy’s desire to register a career altering win that he broke his own non call out win in April – and albeit in his own humble polite manner name dropped David Price.

Murphy’s have also stated big news awaits for Gary Spike O’Sullivan, but as of yet he has not been confirmed on this card.
