New Year’s Resolutions: “The Gallant Sweeney will shine”

Gary Sweeney had less than ten minutes of competitive ring action during his debut year, but during that time he smashed his way to three knockout wins.

The young Mayo cruiserweight has brought an all-action style with him to the pros, and looks to finish bouts from the first bell.

Sweeney had been due to debut in September 2015, but delay after delay meant that he had to wait until May to step through the ropes. That said, the Ballinrobe big man believes he has taken to the pro code well.

The 2011 European Youth silver medalist spoke to Irish-Boxing.com about his opening year in the paid game, and described how “I always had a pro style so I fitted in well and things worked out well later in the year for me. My team MGM stood by me, which is what they said they would. I haven’t had many round to show my skills, but I’m sure I will get tested and what will be will be.”

Going forward, Sweeney wants to continue blasting out opponents, and is even eyeing minor titles in the next year. The Connacht puncher admits that “I’d love to have as many [fights] as I can to be honest. It’s nice to keep busy. I’d love to fight for Youth World title this year, I’m going to put a lot into 2017. I’m staying focused & positive and please God what I want I will get in 2017. I’m only 23 in April and mad for action.”
