Murphy: Not even ‘Da Spoiler’ could ruin my debut

NOT even a fighter so famed for spoiling he has boasts ‘Da Spoiler’ as his ring moniker could ruin Noel Murphy’s pro debut.

The Cork welterweight punched for pay for the first time in America on late last on November 21 and couldn’t be happier with how his first stint in a pro ring went.

Murphy registered a comfortable points win against the awkward Anthony Smith on a card which Alan Phelan also appeared and Ireland’s latest debutant heralded ‘a brilliant experience’ when discussing the fight with Irish-boxing.com.

“My debut was an unbelievable experience,” the  20 year old said.

“The atmosphere was just on a different level than you’d get in the amateurs, I had brilliant support even though it was only my debut. I was very comfortable throughout the fight, I found myself fighting for the crowd a bit too much but I know when I gain a bit more experience that I will reign that in, My opponent was a very awkward southpaw and his nickname “Da spoiler” couldn’t be more suitable as he was holding and dropping his head an awful lot, but the main thing is I got the win and now my career is underway.”

In the age of big name amateurs and with the abundance of new fighting Irish pro’s Murphy’s debut slipped under the radar somewhat. However the former Intermediate champion from Douglas in Cork is hoping an all action approach can eventually put him forefront on Irish fight fans minds.

“I’m hoping to give the fans action packed and high energy fights. I want to be in the kind of fights everyone wants to see, I want to use my boxing skills as much as possible and avoid any unnecessary punishment, but I want to do that while still giving the fans a entertaining fights and a few knockouts to enjoy.”

Murphy won’t get out before the turn of the New Year, but he is confident he can start 2015 with ‘a bang’ and make a positive impression on the game over the next 12 months.

“The short term goal is just to keep in shape and start 2015 with a bang. And my long term goal is to win a lot of belts and get big paydays, which i guess is every boxers dream. To be honest I’m living out a dream in New York at the minutes and none of it would be possible without my family, friends, my trainer Tom Power and my manager Kevin Crowley.”

It seems xx will remain Stateside and fight out of New York for now and the recently turned over fighter believes its the perfect environment for him to develop as a fighter.

“I turned pro because I always wanted too, it was a dream of mine. When the opportunity presented itself I took it. I’m here in America with my manager, who also from Cork, Kevin Crowley. Kevin has sorted absolutely everything for me and has made sure that training remains my number 1 priority. I am in a place and with a team that can help me improve as a fighter.”
