Martin J Mongan loses out on Day 1 of World Junior Championships

By Bernard O’Neill – IABA Press Officer

Day 2 schedule – Boxing2015 – AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships Day2 Schedule
Martin J Mongan flew the Banner for Irish boxing with pride on the opening day of the AIBA World Junior Championships despite losing out in his last-32 bout.

The Clare light-heavy was beaten by Russia’s Dmitri Fominykh after three cracking rounds in St Petersburg, Russia.

“It was a tremendous performance from Martin, tremendous heart against the Russian champion and you couldn’t have asked for anymore from him. He gave it everything and went down fighting,” said Irish coach Billy McClean.

Cork pair Eamer Coughlan and Tommy Hyde will be in action today, along with Eric Nash and Jack Conroy.

Ireland didn’t exactly get a rub of the green in yesterday’s draw, a view echoed by McClean, who is working Ireland’s corner with Dmitry Dmitruk and Fergal McKenna in the Northern Russian capital.

He added: “It is a tremendously tough draw for our boys out here and we have some really tough contests coming up against some of the best nations in the world.”
