Mick Conlan ends Cacace talk- new opponent agreed

Michael Conlan has quashed any hope Anthony Cacace had of fighting him on the massive Feile card set for the Falls Park on August 3.

‘The Apache’ caused quite a stir over the weekend as he registered a surprise call out of the London and Rio Olympian.

The 30-year-old was looking to take advantage of the fact Vladimir Nikitin had pulled out of a fight originally scheduled to top the bill – and on Friday stated he was more than willing to fill a Russian sized hole.

Manager and older brother, Jamie Conlan had revealed Top Rank and MTK were in talks with fighters they believed were tougher tests and more beneficial than Nikitin in terms of moving the Belfast fighter  toward a word title shot.

Indeed, he suggested Sofiane Takoucht had agreed to fight and European featherweight champion Andoni Gago was in talks along with “two or three” others.

However, after seeing a positive reaction to his call out, the super featherweight, who had a British title fight with Sam Bowen pulled off the card due to injury suffered by the champion, upped the volume of the talk.

“Since I put it out there it’s sparked a big interest especially from the local fight fans. If this fight was announced it would be huge. It will be the first test Conlan has had no point in bringing in someone who will fall over after a round or two,” Cacace told Irish-boxing.com on Saturday.

On social media on Sunday the former Irish champion revealed he could make featherweight if requested and queried as to why no new opponent was announced.

However, World Championship gold medal winner, Conlan put paid to any hopes Cacace had of topping the ESPN+ and BT Sport broadcast bill alongside him come August 3.

The Top Rank fighter revealed an new opponent has already been decided on. Indeed, he claims he knew within 24 hours who would replace Nikitin and the public would be made aware soon.
