McGuigan: This is McCullough’s coming of age fight he has to show us what he can do

MARCO McCullough needs to look good in a ‘coming of age’ fight at The Waterfront on Friday night claims promoter Barry McGuigan.

With fights at welterweight and against the likes of Noely O’Brien and former super bantamweight champion of Europe Willie Casey the Belfast featherweight hasn’t quite had the cotton wool treatment, but McGuigan believes Martin Parlagi will prove his stiffest test to date.

The Irish boxing legend and now CEO of Cyclone Promotions also stresses an impressive win over the the undefeated Solvak with a strong amateur pedigree will help the Irish champion progress to the next level.

McGuigan has faith the 24 year old Breen’s Gym boxer, but challenged McCullough to go out and show the fight fans what he is capable of.

“This is Mark’s coming of age I believe. It is a really tough fight, this guy is coming to win and they plan to go on to bigger things. I think they are making a big mistake. I am thrilled to be getting a chance to promote this kid because I think other than Selby he is the best super featherweight in Britain,” said the Clones Cyclone.

“At some stage in a fighters career you have to say the mufflers are off son go out and show us what you can do. This is Marc McCullough’s fight on Friday night. It is a proper acid test. He has to show everyone what he can do it, I know and I am confident he can do it, but he has to show that on Friday night. I believe in this kid and I have every confidence he will win on Friday, but it is a tough fight. If he has any weaknesses they will be exposed on Friday night.”

“This is a fight he needs, because we are at a stage where with both (McCullough and Jamie Conlan) these guys want to crack on win titles. We will apply for a British licence for Mark and ask the British board ‘where are we?’ in terms of Mark. The thing with Cyclone Promotions is if we get one door slammed in our face we will create other openings because these guys deserve title fights and we are going to bring them here.”

Parlagi has promised to out box McCullough on the Waterfront Brawl card that also includes Jamie Conlan, Conrad Cummings, Willie Casey and Conal Carmichael, but Team McCullough are expecting the Solvak to come out firing early.

If he does he will play into the Irish Prospect of the Year’s hands claims McGuigan.

“The way he beat Willie Casey, in destructive fashion, breaking him down, he can beat anybody like that. He is massive for the weight, far bigger than I was. He is a big big fella and he loves attrition fights. Mark will love this guy to come try knock him out, he loves a guy to walk on to him.”
