Matthew Wilton kicked off this evening’s action in Belfast with an entertaining points win.

The unbeaten 26 year old took on the hugely experienced Kevin McCauley in the opening bout at the Short’s Sports and Social club, and scored a hard-fought victory.

Fighting for the first time in a year, Wilton shaded a close opening round, working effectively when he pinned McAuley on the ropes.

It was a quick start to the second round for ‘Speedy,’ and he would hurt McAuley with a short left, but the experienced Engishman would recover well.

McCauley had drawn in his previous bout, which was his 150th, but Wilton was leaving nothing to chance and remained on top in the third, landing a big overhand right that taised the noise levels in the intimate venue.

Wilton looked slightly tired going into the final round, but sought to put on a big finish for his home fans, pinning McCauley to the ropes again an unloading until the final bell.

The result in little doubt, referee Hugh Russell Jr awarded the Belfast man the decision by a scoreline of 40:36.

The win sees Wilton stretch his unbeaten record to 14(3)-0, while McCauley drops to 11-130(11)-10 following his night’s work.
