Matchroom prospect to face Irish boxer in pro debut

Former top amateur John Docherty will make his professional debut this weekend and will do so against an Irish opponent.

The Scottish middleweight makes his bow at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle this Saturday [October 13th] evening.

Docherty boxes on the undercard of Lewis Ritson’s European lightweight title fight with Francesco Patera and will face Sligo-Manchester puncher Jordan Latimer [2(0)-0].

Latimer last boxed in May, outpointing Jade Karam 39-37 over four rounds and had been building towards an all-Irish clash with Limerick’s Graham McCormack [3(0)-0] in December.

Born in Manchester but spending much of his childhood in Sligo, Latimer turned pro as a teenager last year and has expressed a desire for challenging fights from the off.

The 20-year-old’s team at Assassin Boxing said that “this a huge opportunity for Jordan who is gearing up for a big domestic fight in Ireland in December.”

Docherty won bronze at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia and turned pro afterwards, linking up with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions and trainer Tony Sims.

The 20-year-old Inverness southpaw was due to face tough Spaniard Alejandro Mostazo, debut opponent of Thomas Finnegan, this weekend but will now take on Latimer.

It is hoped that the fight will be shown live on Sky Sports or, at the very least, streamed live on Facebook.

Topped by Ritson v Patera, the card this weekend also features Dave Allen, Simon Vallily, Anthony Fowler, Thomas Ward, Lawrence Osueke, Hosea Burton, Joe Laws, Darren Reay, Chad Ellis, Terry Wilkinson, and a British and Commonwealth light welterweight title fight between Glenn Foot and Robbie Davies Jr.
