Matt Wilton [16(3)-0] could challenge for the English title when Matchroom return to Belfast in the Autumn.

Ryan Burnett’s promoters are set to bring the new world champ back to his home city in and around October and would like to put the Belfast fighter on in and English title fight.

Wilton was born in England so qualifies for the strap and could use it as a stepping stone to British title success.

The younger brother of Luke, who was a British and European flyweight title challenger, was in typical laid back mood talking after his victory over fight game centenarian William Warburton, one week ago today, but did reveal an English title tilt has been mooted.

“They talked about an English title, so we will wait and see. I was born in England so I can fight for it. There are few options at the end of the day. Matchroom have mentioned but there is nothing concrete. It could happen here, hopefully it will.”

The belt is currently held by Galway man John O’Donnell, who lives in London. The former Commonwealth champ however has British title aspirations of his own, and wants to be the man to take over from Bradley Skeete as British champion, meaning that the English belt may become vacant in the near future.

Wilton was talking after a routine win over the well-traveled journeyman saw him make sixteen fights without defeat.

He has hoped for a better clash on the card, but revealed he was content enough to win on a big Matchroom card.

“The opponent changed three times we accepted them all so there was nothing we could do,” he continued.

“I am happy just to get the win. My Dad was in England a couple of weeks ago with the journeymen he has and he saw Warburton, he was in a bad mood that night and he went out and dropped the lad twice, so I was wary of his right hand!£

“He is a tough journeyman, you’re hardly going to take him out. You know he is tough so you just opt to give him a boxing lesson. Plan was to box for five rounds, but I got lazy in the last. It’s all learning at the end of the day. “
