Martinez: Frampton is just another fighter I’d prefer champion Quigg next

KIKO Martinez has distanced himself from a rematch with Carl Frampton claiming the only fighter to inflict stoppage defeat on him is ‘just another fighter’.

After WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz claimed his team would prefer him to fight Scott Quigg before trading leather with Frampton, Martinez, who after his defeat to ‘The Jackal’ has claimed the World title and defended it three times, was linked with a summer Belfast return.

However, speaking to boxingscene.com the former Bernard Dunne defeater also indicated he would like to fight the Bury fighter ahead of sharing a ring with the Cyclone Promotions star, that beat him to win the European title in February of 2013.

Fight followers would suggest the pair are avoiding Frampton in the belief Quigg is a much easier prospect, but like Cruz, Martinez, who is now part of Sergio Martinez team, suggests the fact Quigg has a title-the WBA Interim strap- makes him more a more attractive prospect.

Speaking to Boxingscene about his options the fighter with significant Irish previous said,

“I just have to wait and get over my injury and sit down with my promoter. So we just have to wait and see who is offered and who I have to fight next.

“It is too early to say, but who ever Maravilla choose will be a good opponent. I don’t think the injury is too serious. I actually picked it up in training camp. I think it is a couple months I will be fine. First I have to get over this injury then we can start thinking about unification fights with Scott Quigg, Leo Santa Cruz and Rigondeaux.

“Right now Frampton is just another fighter, he doesn’t have any belt. He fights only at home. There are other interesting fights like against Scott Quigg rather than Frampton with no title.”

Martinez also pointed out that his lose to Frampton proved the caytalst to a turn around that has seen him claim a world title a put four knock out wins together.

“Losing to Frampton made me a better fighter and a better person. I am glad I lost the fight because I learnt a lot. I then worked harder and won a world title. I can even get better.”

The Frampton fear that exists might not be all bad news for ‘The Jackal’. Quigg can only fight one of the champions, and it is rumored Matchroom are not to keen to put him in with either and are trying to make a lucrative bout with the Belfast fighter before an “Emperors New Clothes’ scenario plays out.
