The three time World title challenger had made his money, earned the respect of the boxing world, fought pound for pound stars, claimed Irish, British and European honours and more.

There was no shame in hanging up the gloves there and then. However, Macklin had one burning ambition he wanted to claim a World title. He challenged three times was outclassed by the beast that is Gennady Golovkin, pushed then pound for pound star Sergio Martinez and had been robbed against Felix Sturm.

As a result ‘Mack The Knife’ elected to fight on in a bid to pursue his dream- and it seems he could have earned himself a fourth tilt and one more massive payday.

Macklin, who last week retired, was contact by Golden Boy Promotions re fighting the massive Mexican star, who is fresh off a knock victory over Amir Khan.

The former Irish champion made the revelation to Boxing News, who have an in dept interview with the popular puncher in this week’s edition, but admitted he had already made his mind up re retiring.

Indeed, the honest former 160lbs fighter admitted at this stage of his career he would only have a puncher’s chance of beating the Golden Boy world champion.

“There was a bit of contact from Golden Boy Promotions regarding a possible Canelo fight. I knew I wouldn’t be able to beat Canelo – I’d only have a puncher’s chance at this stage!” He told Boxing News.

The offer just shows Macklin’s relevance and standing Stateside, while it raises questions regarding the possibility of an immediate GGG v Canelo clash.
