Not the most noted amateur that will join the pro ranks this year, but Jay Byrne claims he will start punching for pay with a bang.

With the likes of Micheal Conlan, Paddy Barnes and even Katie Taylor all expected to receive promotional offers after Rio the fanfare surrounding this former vest wearer won’t compare.

However, the 29 year old, the latest Irish puncher to join the pro ranks, claims he will make an eyebrow raising debut later this year.

Byrne, who was a sparring partner for Anthony Fitzgerald ahead of his proposed February 5 clash, is ready to start with a bang.

“We have a debut date lined up. We just have to wait until its officially agreed an confirmed and then it’ll be released, but it’s gonna be a big one.”

Byrne might be planning on starting big, but he isn’t getting ideas above his station. The Dublin and Leinster year three novice winner is aware there is a lot to learn, but is willing to put in the hard work to in order to reap future reward.

“I train full time and am 100% dedicated to everything I do in life so trust me I will always give 100%. In the short term I will try get some fights to adapt to the pro style and then maybe work up to an Irish title. In saying that, titles are not on my mind at the minute. I just want start learning and developing and go from there.

Byrne might not be a face or name recognisable to even the most hard core of fight fans, but in his corner will be a small Irish fight favourite. Former Irish champion and all action puncher Eddie Hyland will follow in his late father Paddy Hyland’s footsteps. The eldest of three boxing brothers will help keep the Hyland legacy alive swapping sitting in the corner listening to instructions between rounds to bestowing his knowledge on Byrne. The fighter, who hopes to campaign at light middleweight, will work with Hyland and respected cut man and boxing brain Tommy McCormack as he bids to leave a mark on the domestic scene over the coming years.

“I hope to do that learning under Eddie and Tommy’s guidance,” Byrne added.

“I discovered when sparring Fitzy that I much prefer the pro style and at my age I got thinking of giving it a bash. I have been training under Eddie and Tommy Mc Cormack for the past five months and have noticed a huge difference in my boxing. After a good chat with both lads we all agreed that the pro side of the game would suit me a lot better and I look forward to proving them right.”
