King Kong beats his chest in Mexico – Jono Carroll returns to winning ways

Jono Carroll made a return to winning ways in Mexico last night.

‘King Kong’ outscored  Eleazar Valenzuela in an entertaining 10-round super-featherweight clash on the undercard of of Juan Francisco Estrada’s WBC super-flyweight title defence against Dewayne Beamon.

The colourful Dubliner secured a unanimous decision over the Mexican as he put some distance between him and his sole career defeat, a reverse to IBF world champion Tevin Farmer in March.

The bout never looked a gimme return and the home fighter did give Carroll a work out.

The early rounds were evenly matched and Valenzuela did manage to test the chin of the ever busy Carroll in the fourth and fifth round.

However, the recent world title challenger found began to assert himself in the second half of the fight.

Showing a high work rate, good movement and a variety to his work ‘King King’ dominated down the stretch and ended up a relatively clear 98-92 winner on all three judges scorecards.

The Matchroom super feather had predicted a stoppage win leading into the bout, but Venezuela was as durable as expected and never looked like being stopped.

The rounds and a relatively competitive fight will certainly stand to the Dub who hopes to be back in world title action as soon as possible.

The wins see’s Carroll progress to 17(3)-1(0)-1 whilst his opponent slips to 20(16)-12(2)-4.

Meanwhile Estrada stopped Beamon with a TKO in the ninth to successfully defend his WBC and Ring Magazine super-flyweight crowns.
