Kelvin McDonald aiming to make pro debut statement

Kelvin McDonald makes his professional debut this Saturday night and the teenager isn’t content on scoring ‘just’ a win.

The Larne super featherweight makes his pro bow on the ‘Back in Belfast’ card at the Shorts Sports and Social Club in East Belfast and plans to make a big statement.

The 19-year-old goes straight in with noted hardman Alec Bazza, giving up a big size advantage to ‘The Belfast Spartan’ and hopes to show that he is a bit different to most young debutants.

As soon as his move to the pros ha been announced, McDonald was already calling for fights with fellow debutants Ruadhan Farrell and Jamie Douglas and ‘Boom Boom’ is keen to begin with a bang.

Having fought on the semi-pro/unlicensed scene over the past year, McDonald wants to prove that he belongs in the proper pro game.

A good amateur in his youth, McDonald explained to Irish-Boxing.com that “my goal for my debut is to go and make a statement.”

“A win won’t be good enough, it has to be a statement to prove the doubters wrong.”

“Every fight I’ll be going into I’ll be wanting to make a statement.”

He gets a chance against Bazza and McDonald admitted that “I’m expecting a hard fight and expecting him to come out and have a go.”

“With it being in Belfast, in front of people he will know, he’s not gonna lie down so it will be a tough fight which will bring the best out of me.”

McDonald has been training hard for the four-rounder, including plenty of sessions with the card’s headliner, Luke Wilton.

Describing his preparations, the Antrim 130lber outlined how “my first pro training camp has gone amazing I couldn’t ask for any better for the length of time I got – it was five weeks, not ideal, but it worked and I’m ready to go.”

“I’ve been doing some tough rounds with Luke Wilton think it was 19 rounds in total in the bank against him and it’s amazing experience being in with him after he’s fought for major titles.”

“I couldn’t ask for better sparring.”
