The rematch ‘is on the cards’ and may happen ‘quite soon’ according to Taylor

Could the rematch happen sooner than you think?

Since defeating Delfine Persoon [43(18)-2(1)] to become undisputed lightweight world champion in Madison Square Garden on June 1 Katie Taylor [14(6)-0] has claimed the rematch is ‘inevitable’.

Indeed, upon hearing that some had questioned the scoring post the fight the first undisputed Irish world champ of the four belt era the Bray fighter called for the fight to happen next.

However, in the days following her team pointed out they have a pre planned road map that they want to follow.

That map includes a mega fight with seven weight world champion, whom Taylor hopes to fight this year.

The Puerto Rican has one more fight until she is contractually obliged to face and has at times poured cold water on a meeting and it’s been suggested she wants an increase on the originally agreed purse.

That all suggests if Taylor wants to be out again in September Serrano may not be in the opposite corner. Her team are adamant there are plenty of exciting options out there, but some are picking up on comments the Wicklow fighter made while doing the British press rounds yesterday and predicting a Persoon return may indeed happen straight away.

Speaking across the pond on Thursday the Matchroom fighter claimed the rematch is ‘on the cards’ and pointed out it may happen ‘quite soon’.

“The rematch is inevitable. It was a very close fight and it could’ve went either way but I thought I did enough in the earlier rounds to nip the fight – and that’s how the judges saw it as well.

“But, it was a close fight and a rematch is on the cards quite soon.”

Defining what is meant by ‘quite soon’ is impossible and from all that came out after the fight it seems more likely any repeat would happen in 2020.

It is certainly one that will draw massive attention considering it would be a repeat of what some are calling the greatest female fight of all time.

Taylor admits she was aware it would be a tough fight and she would have to answer questions throughout.

“I was expecting a very, very tough fight. I knew this fight was going to be the hardest of my career. I knew I was going to need to show a lot of heart and dig deep.

“And that was absolutely the case so it was a great win in the end,” she adds before the eager to crowd please stat revealed it was a little too exciting for her liking.

“It was a very exciting fight, probably a bit too exciting for my liking. It was an absolute war for 10 rounds and I definitely don’t want too many of those fights in my career.”
