“He was breathing out of his arse” – Karl Kelly open to Aiden Metcalfe fight following call-out

One of Dublin’s newest pro boxers is up for an early-career match-up with another Dublin novice as the lightweight and super feather scene is Ireland continues to expand.

Monkstown’s Karl Kelly has responded to talk emanating out from the team of Crumlin’s Aiden Metcalfe, and he wouldn’t mind getting in a pro ring with the former top amateur.

Ahead of his debut, Kelly was dragged into a social media spat between Metcalfe and another pro newcomer, Gary Cully.

‘Little Sexy’ explained to Irish-Boxing.com how “Aiden’s called me out on Facebook… not even Aiden, his Da’s called me out on Facebook. That’s telling you something.”

“If Aiden wants to fight me, he knows where I am. ”

“He’s saying he’s the best in Ireland, he’s not the best in Ireland.”

Kelly is familiar with the 22 year old Boxing Ireland prospect and recalled how “funnily enough, I sparred Aiden.”

“I sparred him for a minute and a half then he got out – that’s the way we were doing it, changing every minute and a half – and he was breathing out of his arse after a minute and a half.”

“This was three or four weeks before his professional debut! You train for your professional debut as if it were a world title.”

Kelly debuted earlier this month against Damian Lawniczak, dropping and outpointing the tough Pole over four rounds. Metcalfe fought the same opponent last month in his debut, edging a one-point win.

22 year old Kelly believes the contrast in debuts is telling and he described how “I wasn’t at the fight, I was trying to watch it on Facebook and I think I did a lot better than Aiden did.”

“He couldn’t drop your man. He made work out of that fight. He beat your man by one point, I beat your man 39-36. I boxed well, I put him down, Aiden didn’t even test him. Aiden was falling all over the place in the second round.”
