John Hutchinson set for Irish title return following Thai traffic accident

A Bangkok car crash and a social media call-out have conspired to ensure that John Hutchinson‘s world tour will make a stop-off back in his native Ireland.

The Donegal light middleweight had been based on the Thai island of Phuket, and had scored three wins on the other side of the world this year. Hutchinson [10(3)-2(0)-2] then had a fight lined up in Beijing, China of all places, but a series of events, both fortunate and unfortunate, means that the ‘Buncrana Banger’ will be back in his homeland soon hoping to challenge for the Irish title.

On Monday the Ulsterman was involved in a road accident which has forced him to pull out of his fight in China. However, whilst lying in his Bangkok hospital bed, some social media shenanigans have led to Irish champion and MTK stablemate Pauly Upton agreeing to a fight with the popular Hutchinson.

The details of the fight are yet to be finalised, but John-Boy will be returning to Ireland soon where he will link-up with a former world champion. Hutchinson is to join the Wild Atlantic Gym in Culdaff under former IBF cruiserweight king Glenn McCrory.

Speaking to Irish-Boxing.com from South East Asia, Hutchinson explained that “I came up to Bangkok to train here for a a fight in Beijing, but got hit by a car while I was on the back of a motorbike taxi on Monday.”

“I’ve been in hospital a few days, it scarred me up but nothing’s broke, just a few cuts and sores.”

The laid back Hutchinson has dealt with the accident well, and noted how “this is where you grow, and it makes you want things more.”

“I believe everything happens for a reason in life and maybe missing this fight in China was meant to be as it’s sending me back to Ireland where I love and where I don’t get the chance to be much.”

A deal between Upton, Hutchinson, MTK, and the BUI, is yet to be trashed out for an Irish title fight, but the 31 year old is hopeful.

A dedicated trainer who has undergone a transformative few months in Phuket, Hutchinson is hugely confident going into the title challenge

“This is fight I’m gonna do everything to win,” he stated.

“With the right people around me and training at home, it will be such a buzz.”

“I’ve never had the chance to experience that before as there were no gyms and I always had to leave home!”

“Can’t wait to get home and prepare, this is a fight I’m 1000% up for.”
