John Breen reveals extent of Feargal McCrory’s injury and warns Stephen McAfee

John Breen has revealed that it was he that made the decision to pull Feargal McCrory out of his Irish title fight with Stephen McAfee – and has warned the Dubliner to be prepared for an onslaught if and when the bout is rescheduled.

McCrory [9(3)-0] was confirmed to be out of the Irish super featherweight title clash on Monday evening, with the Tyrone fighter informing his opponent’s team last week that he has a hand injury.

BUI Celtic champ and Irish title mandatory challenger McAfee [4(2)-0-1] was not happy – and told Irish-Boxing.com he felt fear was the motive behind the McCrory’s decision not to fight.

The Coalisland man dismissed this accusation in the strongest possible terms.

Additionally, McCrory’s trainer, the legendary John Breen, has stressed that he was the man to cancel the fight and that fear of the Dubliner was not a factor whatsoever.

Belfast’s Breen revealed ‘Fearless’ had been warned off punching for two weeks after suffering a niggle in his left hand at a crucial time in camp.

Following one week of recovery, the coach then tested the lead hand and, there and then, pulled his man from the November 24th fight night in Drimnagh.

Breen explained how “Feargal damaged his right hand a week on Friday gone by [November 2nd], he was told by the hospital not to punch with it for two weeks.”

“He was still doing some training but not punching with his lead hand.”

“I gave it a week then I put a pad on my right hand and told Feargal to punch it with his lead hand – not too hard – to see his reaction.”

“He flinched as his punch landed and I automatically shouted ‘that’s it, I’m pulling you off the bill’.”

The southpaw still wanted to proceed with the fight and backed himself to beat ‘Showtime’ McAfee with just one hand buy the veteran Breen was having none of it.

The coach continued: “Feargal wanted to fight Stephen but with no lead hand!”‘

“I wasn’t taken any chances with the fight,” he added before warning McAfee.

“You can take it from me, McCrory is far from being scared. Be prepared when the fight is rescheduled.”
