Joe Fitzpatrick wins to claim at least Commonwealth Bronze

Immaculata Boxing Club fighter Joe Fitzpatrick has claimed at least a bronze at the Commonwealth Games after overcoming the tough Kenyan Okongo Nicholas Okoth.

The Lightweight southpaw had good success with the jab in the first, using it to tee up some stinging overhand rights.

Fitzpatrick’s Kenyan opponent upped the tempo in the second but the Team NI man continued to catch him with the right as he came forward, putting him two rounds up on the judges scorecards going into the last.

Fitzpatrick did receive a cut under the left eye in the final round after a clash of heads but he never looked in danger and saw out the fight to claim victory to claim Team NI’s first boxing medal.

Fitzpatrick will fight again in his Semi Final at 7.15pm
