Jay Byrne KNOCKS OUT Crank Whitehouse to win BUI Celtic title

Jay Byrne is the new BUI Celtic welterweight champion following a knockout win over Crank Whitehouse in Dublin tonight.

The co-main event on the ‘Celtic Clash 4’ bill, Loughlinstown’s Byrne stopped Whitehouse at the end of the fourth round.

Both brought massive crowds to the South Circular Road for one of the most hotly anticipated all-Irish fights of the year.

A cagey first, featuring some bravado from both, saw both try to work the jab – however it was Whitehouse landing the shots of note.

A more open second saw both have success, however again the cleaner work was coming from Whitehouse.

Byrne began using his size advantage to good effect in the third, bullying Whitehouse back and landing nice uppercuts on the inside.

It was a sign of things to come and Byrne hurt Whitehouse in the fourth with two huge rights. Following a tangle, Whitehouse went down and looked to be in trouble when the fight resumed. Byrne was finding a home for big shots consistently until one left the Balbriggan youngster out on his feet and he eventually crumpled. Whitehouse, eyes glazed, rose unsteadily at nine, but referee Emile Tiedt correctly waved off the bout.

The wins sees Byrne improve to 6(2)-3(1), while Whitehouse drops to 7(2)-1(1).
