Jay Byrne fight to go on despite weigh-in drama

There was drama today at the weigh-in for Jay Byrne‘s BBBoC Celtic light middleweight title defence in Scotland.

The Dubliner puts the three-nations belt on the line at the Trump Turnberry resort against Scottish champ Stefan Sanderson but the challenger won’t be able to win the belt – and Byrne won’t be able to lose it either.

Sanderson [5(1)-0] tipped the scales at 155lbs this afternoon and, despite going away to try and shed the excess pound, he twice failed to hit the 154lbs limit in subsequent attempts.

Byrne [8(2)-6(2)] came in bang on the 154lbs mark.

Irish-Boxing.com have been in contact with ‘The Negotiator’ who informs that he will retain the belt regardless of the result in the Kynoch Boxing headliner tomorrow night – and that a win or a draw would count as a successful defence in the record books.

Byrne sensationally claimed the title last November when he upset another Scot, Marc Kerr, on another Kynoch show.

Afterwards the Loughlinstown fighter announced his retirement from the sport – noting that only an Irish title fight could tempt him back – however he was soon enticed out of his short break.

While he did not make weight today, Sanderson won the Scottish 154lbs title last year – defeating Paul Kean who had previously beaten Byrne for the BUI Celtic belt.
