Swindon-Donegal super middleweight Jamie Cox [22(12)-0] has this morning been confirmed for the super middleweight bracket of the World Boxing Super Series.

30 year old Cox was announced alongside Swede Erik Skoglund [26(12)-0] who moves down from light heavyweight for the tournament.

Already confirmed at the weight is WBA champion George Groves [26(19)-3(2)], with five more to be announced ahead of the draw in Monaco on July 8th.

The tournament acts as a straight elimination, with quarters, semis, and a final, with the first round of matches beginning in September and October, with semis in early 2018, and finals pencilled in for May.

There will be four seeded boxers, and they will choose their quarter final opponents at the draw next weekend. While it has not been confirmed, it is assumed that Cox will be an unseeded boxer.

Running concurrently with the super middleweights is a cruiserweight bracket. The boxers confirmed at 200lbs are WBC champion Mairis Breidis, IBF champion Murat Gassiev, former IBF and WBC champ Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, former WBO champ Marco Huck, and WBA title challenger Yunier Dorticos.

Between super middleweight and cruiserweight there is a prize pool of $50,000,000, with the winners also taking home the Muhammad Ali Trophy.

Cox, who defeated Lewis Taylor on his Matchroom debut last month, will box this Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London as a warm-up ahead of the tournament. This card also features Cork-Cuban cruiserweight Mike Perez, who is rumoured to potentially feature in the WBSS.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said that “this is a great opportunity for Jamie to announce himself on the World stage and he shouldn’t be underestimated in this tournament. He will box on our show in London this Saturday to warm up for the series and will bring plenty of excitement and power!”

Roberto Dalmiglio, head of the Comosa management board behind the venture added that “the World Boxing Super Series promised to deliver a blend of proven champions and rising challengers. Right now, the Muhammad Ali Trophy features four world champions, two former world champion and two up-and-coming contenders that have never lost a fight in their lives. We are thrilled with the current line-up and will announce further high-profile participants in the coming weeks.”

Kalle Sauerland, Comosa´s Chief Boxing Officer, noted how “it takes a lot of heart and courage to sign up for the World Boxing Super Series,” he said. “The quality of their competitors will be beyond anything they have ever experienced in their young careers. But their undefeated record tells us they are ready to take on the world´s best fighters. And this is that makes the Muhammad Ali Trophy so special – you have proven champions on the one side and hungry contenders on the other side. Boxing fans can expect a lot of drama and excitement.”
