Jamie Conlan confirms he will fight again

‘The Mexican’ will fight again.

Its been a case of rest and not retirement for Jamie Conlan [19(11)-1(1)].

The popular Belfast fighter was quiet about his future following his World title defeat to Jerwin Ancajas last November.

Following the reverse to a fighter that looks likely to go on and become a major name, there were some suggestions the war-loving Falls Road super flyweight may call it a day.

On the other hand those within the game suggested the new father wanted to fight on the same bill as his brother Michael at least once before hanging up his glovesand Conlan himself hinted that he may return to the ring.

Regardless, ‘what’s next’ was a question the recent World title challenger wasn’t keen on answering definitively.

However, while speaking to IFL TV this week the 31-year-old officially confirmed he will fight at least one more time.

Conlan stated that “I am not retired.”

“I had a nice rest and loved it. My missus just had a wee baby so I have just been spending a lot of time being a daddy and loving life.”

“I have enjoyed every minute of my rest. I have been ticking over, but now we have a few dates in mind and I have been trying to get the head back on to get back into the gym and back over to camp with Danny Vaughan,” Conlan revealed before admitting it took him time to get over his first career defeat.

“The rest has been brilliant, but as far as career is concerned, you’ve reached the pinnacle of the sport and you came up short and dusting yourself down and going again was tough enough, but I am dead on over it and I am ready to get back into the game again.”

Conlan, who has taken a role as a Professional Development Coordinator with the Mack The Knife Global management agency, is currently in New York ahead of his younger brother’s fight with David Berna at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

The Top Rank prospect looks likely to next fight in Las Vegas on the Horn-Crawford undercard before making his long-awaited Irish homecoming at the SSE Odyssey Arena in the Summer – a bill which would seem a perfect fit for the elder Conlan.
