Jake Hanney wants Tyrone McKenna rematch following “joke” stoppage

Tyrone McKenna [13(5)-0-1] has named dropped the likes of Matt Wilton, Phil Sutcliffe Jr, Tyrone Nurse, and Ohara Davies over the last few days as he continues plot big domestic dust ups.

However, McKenna should be looking back and not forward according to his most recent victim Jake Hanney [5(4)-1(1)].

The Belfast southpaw defeated Hanney to retain the BUI Celtic light welterweight title at the Waterfront Hall on Friday night, but the Dubliner is adamant he not only wants, but deserves a return.

Hanney labeled the sixth round stoppage ‘a joke’ and feels aggrieved by the defeat.

The 27 year old East Wall man was down on the scorecards and probably needed a stoppage of his own to secure a win, but claims his performance was hampered by inactivity and a lack of sparring in training.

He points to the fact he still performed as proof he could do better in a return.

“Since I got out of the ring all I have heard is ‘rematch, rematch, rematch’ so I think it’s obvious what should happen. I asked Tyrone and he didn’t seem to keen, but his corner said rematch and BoxNation would love a rematch,” Hanney said after the fight.

“I had nine months off and he has been active, so let’s do it again. I don’t want to make too many excuses, he won on the night and probably was ahead on the scorecards, but that wasn’t me at my best.”

“I haven’t boxed in a long time and I had a cut at the start of the camp so I didn’t spar one round in the lead up to the fight. I could have pulled out but I didn’t and I produced that performance without a proper camp imagine what I could do with a full and proper camp in.”

Referee David Irvine stepped in with Hanney under pressure 2:10 into the sixth round. Some argued ringside that it was a very sensible time to call a halt to the fight while some suggested the Dub should have been given a few more seconds.

However, Hanney himself is adamant it was premature and claims he wasn’t hurt.

“I don’t know where the ref was looking, but there was no way that should have been stopped in my opinion. I hurt him three times in the early rounds and I felt I could hurt him again. There is no way it should have been stopped. I think it is a joke. He is accurate and sharp which is always good, but I wasn’t hurt at any stage,” he continued before continuing to push for a repeat.

“I am boxing since I was 10 and I have only lost nine fights, I want to avenge this one. The fight I want next, 100 percent, is Tyrone. I don’t want anyone else.”

“I think I deserve a rematch. I have respect him, he is the champion, you have to have it, but I wasn’t myself in there and I think it will be a different outcome next time. I enjoyed the fight and I think he did to so hopefully he wants it again.”
