Jake Hanney OFF Cork show- Noel Murphy needs new opponent AGAIN

Jake Hanney has pulled out of his proposed Irish title fight with Noel Murphy.

The Dubliner was set to fight the Cork native for the Irish welterweight title on the Leeside Revolution card scheduled for July 20th at the Neptune Stadium.

However, ‘The Wizard’ has pulled off the card and out of the fight meaning the first pro show to come to Cork in more than 10 years unlikely to be topped by an Irish title fight.

Nursing a knee injury, the East Wall fighter didn’t fight in Bracknell last weekend – a show which was cancelled on the day in any case. Hanney had been ordered to compete at welterweight by the BUI before being granted permission to trade leather with the Cork fighter.

Now it can be confirmed that the Dubliner is most definitely out of the fight.

It’s a blow for local hero Murphy, who was hoping to pick up domestic honours upon his return from New York.

Hanney is the second opponent Murphy seen pull out following original scheduled foe Jay Byrne’s exit in May.

A suitable Irish title opponent will prove hard to find with such a short lead in to what is a stacked card. Keane McMahon and Rohan Date are both said to be Irish title keen, but July was too soon for McMahon, who would love it in September, whilst Date was of a similar thinking.

Promoter Martin Horgan is rumoured to be exploring the Celtic title route again for the New York based Rebel.

The 24-year-old claimed the title when he beat Avelino Vazquez in the National Stadium in 2017 and a similar style fight may populate the top of the card.

“I just feel very confident of beating Noel,” Hanney told Irish-Boxing.com when the fight was made.

“I believe I’ll carry a lot more power at welter. That is what I boxed at in Oz and find when I’m around that weight sparring and fighting I am hurting people a lot more. I believe this is a good fight for me.”

Appearing on the fight heavy card are the likes of Graham McCormack,  Siobhan O’Leary, Tommy Hyde in an amateur exhibition, Waterford favourite Craig McCarthy, Stephen McAfee, Irish light middleweight champion Craig O’Brien, Sam Carroll, Katelynn Phelan, Chris Blaney and of course the anticipated clash between Owen Duffy and Eddie Tracey.
