Irish title-chasing Jake Hanney excited to show home fans what they’ve been missing

After a frustrating period of inactivity, former Australian Prospect of the Year Jake Hanney [4(4)-0] has no intentions of hanging around.

A year and a half without a fight, the welterweight banger looks set to become one of the star names of Ricky Hatton and FS Promotions exciting new venture in Ireland.

The Dubliner spoke to irish-boxing.com today at the press conference to officially announce the June 25th show titled ‘The Future’ – and Hanney has big plans.

The exuberant knockout puncher spoke of his delight in returning to these shores, explaining how “It’s great to be back. It’s been a long time since I boxed in the Stadium and I can’t wait to go back and fight there again.”

“My last fight there was an All-Ireland final against Paddy Gallagher, Paddy beat me that day unfortunately, but I am buzzing to go back.”

“There was excitement about me in Australia, but this is a great chance for the home fans to see what I am all about and what I can do.”

“They should be excited too. I am going to bring fast explosive boxing to the ring and belts to the table soon, hopefully.”

A much-vaunted prospect Down Under, Hanney – who turns 27 on Wednesday – revealed his ambitious plans for 2016, stating that “I want to fight for an Irish title by Christmas.”

“I have been scheduled for 10 rounds before so I am already eligible so hopefully that can be sorted. Peter McDonagh has the title but I am not sure if he would defend it.”

“I’d fight whoever for it. Dean Byrne? Whoever.”

Regarding his prolonged absence from the ring, Hanney detailed how “I have been out for a while.”

“I went to Spain and I was going to sign with MGM, I had a great time out there and trained well.”

“A few injuries hampered me then I came home and I have a little boy at home and I wanted to stay with him, so it kind of fizzled out for me.”

“The chance to fight on this show came up then and I grabbed it. I am dying to get back in.”

“I might have to get rid of ring rust in this fight but I have some good sparring.”

“I am sparring Pajo Hyland this week and possibly Eric Donovan and then it’s off to Manchester to spar some of Ricky’s lads.”

“With that sparring I don’t expect to be rusty, but this fight will help get rid of the nerves and get me used to fighting in front of the crowd and that again.”
