Jaime Munguia would ‘love’ to rematch Dennis Hogan

Jaime Munguia [33(26)-0]claims he would ‘love’ to rematch Dennis Hogan [28(7)-2(0)-1] and laid the blame that a repeat isn’t happening at the feet of promoters.

The majority believe WBO light middleweight world champion was beyond fortunate to have been granted the decision against the Kildare native in a Monterrey, Mexico hosted DAZN broadcast clash back in April.

Team Hogan started return calls within seconds of the result being called out and claimed Team Munguia gave their word with regard to a rematch in the ring.

Indeed, they later told Irish-boxing.com Golden Boy, who co promote the Mexican with Zanfer Promotions , offered the undefeated 22-year-old the chance to do it again, but had their suggestions knocked back.

DDP Sports, who promote Hogan, were never overly confident they would secure what they are adamant is a deserved second tilt at the WBO strap.

When Patrick Allotey was confirmed as the man next to face Munguia on Mexican independence weekend they did questioned world champions heart and fighting spirit.

However, they also started looking to accelerate the back up plans they were working on – one of which  is believed to be another big opportunity – a move that was proved the right one when the Tijuana confirmed he will move up to middleweight later this year.

Yet not long after the defense against the Ghana native was confirmed along with the plans to move to 160lbs, Munguia confirmed he would have loved to have faced Hogan again.

The world champion claims he was below par against the Aussie based fighter and hints he would love to a return where he could put in a better performance.

“Last year was a great year. Winning the title really opened up doors for me,” Munguia said when speaking Fightnews.com.

“Every fight is a learning experience. I’ll admit, it got complicated, I didn’t look good in that fight (against Dennis Hogan). It wasn’t the best performance. I would love to give Dennis Hogan a rematch but it’s a question of having the promoters agree to it.”

Munguia shook up his training team post nearly having his career plans shook up by Hogan.

He parted ways with Robert Alcazar in Southern California returned to his hometown and is now working under the guidance of fight legend Erik Morales.

The WBO world title holder claims the move has already proved beneficial.

“I’ve been learning with my new trainer Erik Morales. He has taught me a lot because he has the experience of fighting in championship fights.

“The difference training with Erik and Robert it’s just the advice Erik gives me.”
