I’ve held my own with Martin and Breazeale-I can’t be that far off says Turner

It was a disappointing weekend for Sean Turner. Both the Dublin heavyweight and his opponent were disqualified for punching after the referee had stepped in between them.

The DQ prevents the Big man from progressing to 8-0 and worse means he still has to get a six rounder on his slate.

‘Big Sexy’, who has expressed a willingness to fight former Commonwealth champ and fan favourite Martin Rogan as well as Jason Gavern of late, will be disappointed this week, but speaking before the fight he was in positive mood and suggested in the current heavyweight climate he wasn’t too far from pushing into title contention.

“When you look at how things are now I am not a million miles away,” he told Irish-boxing.com.

“I do have to get more rounds in and some more wins, but I would fight Joshua tomorrow. Now I am not saying I would beat him seen as he has more experience and looked a bit of an animal of late, but I would give it a go and further down the line I would take it more confident.”

Turner has always been confident in his ability and particularly his power, but claims looking at the recently dethroned IBF Champion Charles Martin and the belt’s newest challenger Dominic Breazeale has proved to him a good run of wins could put him in elite level.

“I sparred Charles Martin in America before and more than held my own and I sparred Breazeale before the Olympics. He had an easy passage to London and was a basket ball player or something then. I am sure he has improved since and his record looks alright, but he didn’t cause me problems when we sparred. I would be confident of causing those lads trouble and they are not just Joshua opponents but a former World champion and a challenger.

“I don’t think I am too far away, get the wins in and I can look toward titles. Anything can happen in this game, you can get a call from anywhere. I will train away and hopefully keep busy, win Saturday and go from there.”
