Italian Heartbreak for Tommy McCarthy

Tommy McCarthy [14(7)-2(1)] has seen his make-or-break fight this Thursday night shelved.

The Belfast cruiserweight was to man the away corner in Rome on a Matchroom Italia show versus WBC International champion Fabio Turchi [17(13)-0].

Sadly, it has been announced this afternoon that Turchi, for unspecified reasons, has pulled out of the bout.

McCarthy, who arrived in Italy yesterday, will thankfully still fight at the Stadio Nicola Pietrangeli in Lazio in an eight-round contest.

An opponent for ‘The Mac Attack’ will be confirmed shortly and it has been confirmed that this bout will be shown live on Sky Sports.

Considering the notice, and the fact that he was initially the away fighter, a major fight can not be expected but it is another chance for McCarthy to build his record ahead of, hopefully, a big chance.

Having suffered a period of stop-start inactivity following his British title eliminator loss to Matty Askin, McCarthy was stopped versus Richard Riakporhe back in March.

Therefore, while still only 28, the Turchi clash was being framed as a last chance saloon sort of fight for Commonwealth silver medallist McCarthy.

While he won’t get the chance to jump-start his career on Thursday night, it does look to be coming, with a number of cruiserweights either affiliated or associated with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions – whom McCarthy’s manager Mark Dunlop shares a strong working relationship.
