Irvine reflects on Olympic qualification

A lot done a lot more to do, that was the thoughts of teen Brendan Irvine after he qualified for RIO 2016 on Saturday.

The Belfast flyweight joined Paddy Barnes, Micheal Conlan, Joe Ward and Steven Donelly in booking his ticket to this Summer’s Olympics thanks to victory over Bulgarian Daniel Asenov in a European Box Off.

There was an element of last chance saloon for the  ‘Wee Rooster’ going into the clash, but he claims he didn’t feel the pressure, indeed he claims he was more relaxed than ever ahead of the crucial clash.

Speaking post bout the St Pauls Belfast puncher also claimed he has a lot of work to do before the Summer and will focus on making improvements before he travels to Rio.

“I’m absolutely over the moon,” he said afterwards. “It was a very tough fight but we stuck to the plan and it paid off. It’s good to have it put to bed and me on the flight to Rio.

“I was more relaxed than I’ve ever been going into a fight. I stuck to the game plan and kept focused.

“I need to sort my technique and shape out big time so I’ll be working on that over the next couple of months.”
