Belfast Light flyweight Brendan Irvine has been eliminated from the World Championships in Doha, Qatar. The St Paul’s ABC youngster lost out to Cuban number 3 seed Joahnys Argilagos in the quarter finals today

In a battle of the teenagers, the 18 year old Cuban won a unanimous decision over the 19 year old Wee Rooster – although the fight was closer than the three scorecards suggested.

Irvine began fast with Argilagos looking for single shot counters. While a lot of the Belfast man’s punches landed on the gloves of the Cuba, many did get through, but all three judges opted for the Caribbean boxer.

Irvine again was much busier in the second, although a big finish by Argilagos seemed to sway the judges again.

Irvine came out chasing in the final round, a much more open stanza, the Cuban was able to counter a bit more and took the final round on two cards.

The final scorecards were unanimously in favour of Argilagos (30-27 x2, 29-28), although the fight could easily have been scored in favour of Irvine if the judges had opted to reward his workrate in the first two rounds.
