Irish scourge Mira Potkonen strikes again- Fin knocks Broadhurst out of Euros

Serial Irish heart breaker Mira Potkonen was at it again on Friday afternoon as she knocked Amy Broadhurst out of the European Women’s Championships in Madrid.

The Finish fighter famously defeated Katie Taylor at the Rio Games in 2016  and beat Kellie Harrington en route to gold in the last four of the 2018 European Elites.

Now she can add Broadhurst to her list of Irish scalps as she progressed to the European Women’s Champions lightweight decider at the Dealgan fighter’s expense.

The No.1 seed and defending champion was just too good for the rising star and secured an unanimous points win- although the 29028, 30- 27, 30-27, 30-26, 30-25 card was extremely harsh.

It wasn’t quite to be for the reigning 64kg National Elite Champion in terms of claiming silver or gold, but she will be delighted  to have kept up her record of winning a medal in every Euro’s she has entered.

Her first senior medal won this week and comes in bronze means the Louth fighter can now boast to being a 17 time Irish champion, five time Euro champ, World Junior medal winner and seven time European medalist.

Broadhurst, who defeated Russian Anastasiia Beliakova to guarantee herself at least a bronze medal  on Wednesday, will now look to secure her place on the plan to Tokyo, something that won’t prove easy considering she is in the same lightweight category as current world champion Kellie Harrington.

Aoife O’Rourke has the chance to reach the finals tonight as she faces Russia’s current Olympic Youth and World Youth champion Anastasia Shamonova at approximately 7pm
