Irish champion enters Last Man Standing as a late replacement

Next weekend’s Ireland’s Last Man Standing has been blown wide open by a late replacement who some may consider to be the new favourite.

At today’s undercard press conference at the National Stadium in Dublin, former Irish super middleweight champion JJ McDonagh [15(7)-3(1)] was confirmed for the big-money middleweight tournament on Saturday March 3rd.

The eight-man single-elimination fight night will be shown live on TG4 in its entirety, however has suffered from some unfortunate pull-outs and uncertainty since the line-up was announced last night.

Mullingar’s McDonagh, who finished runner-up to Eamonn O’Kane in Prizefighter Middleweights back in 2012, is one of six replacements/standbys to be announced over the coming days, with event promoter Kaz Evans defiantly confident that the tournament will take place.

The 32-year-old southpaw will be coming in sharp having ended a ring hiatus of over a year last month when he scored a win in Mexico.

While the entry list is still somewhat in flux, McDonagh is the seventh boxer in the current line-up alongside Sean McGlinchey, Bernard Roe, Nick Quigley, Gerard Healy, Chris Blaney, and Roy Sheahan.

The eventual eight will trade off next week looking to take their share of a €59,000 prize fund – with at least €25,000 going to the winner alongside a €5,000 donation to their amateur club.
