Down Under Update – Irish boxers secure fights in Australia

Next month in Sydney there is a fight of great interest to Irish boxing fans.

Following his rematch win over Declan Geraghty at the weekend, Jono Carroll is now closing in on a shot at the IBF super featherweight title and the vacant belt will be claimed on Friday August 3rd in Australia.

Top American Tevin Farmer figths Aussie veteran Billy Dib but there are also a number of Irish boxers who have secured fights in Down Under.

On the undercard of the Neutral Corner Promotions bill in Redfern, Buncrana middleweight John Hutchinson will feature.

Then, the following night [Saturday August 4th] on a TGW bill in Toowoomba, reigning New South Wales light welterweight champion Gearoid Clancy, who hails from Oughterard, will fight Queensland champion Steven Spark for the vacant Australian title.

Before all this, Cork welter Danny Keating [2(2)-0] will continue his development on a Steel City Boxing bill at the Wests City Club in Newcastle just outside of Sydney.

Hutchinson [12(4)-2(0)-3] last fought on St Patrick’s Day, drawing over ten rounds versus Craig Parke for the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental title. On the same bill, Clancy [9(2)-5(0)] became a two-weight NSW champion with a dominant points win over Sam Williams.

21-year-old Spark boasts a 5(5)-1(0) record with his sole loss coming via majority decision in China to debutant Baishanbo Nasiyiwula who has since gone on to enter the Jose Sulaiman WBC Invitational where he lost his opening bout to Fredick Lawson.

Opponents for Hutchinson and Keating will be confirmed in due course.

Also in Sydney recently, on June 22nd, Dublin featherweight Shane Roche made his debut but was unfortunately stopped in the opening round by the unbeaten Ben Campbell.

Meanwhile, of course, Sydney-based Portlaoise super bantamweight TJ Doheny [19(13)-0] fights IBF champion Ryosuke Iwasa in Japan on August 16th and is currently in camp in Boston alongside another world-ranked Irish Aussie in Dublin light welter Darragh Foley [15(8)-2(0)] who is awaiting a fight date.

Following years out, Dublin light middleweights Tony Bates [12(9)-0-1] and Tony Senior [10(7)-0] both made returns this year, claiming two wins each and are also awaiting new dates.

Ireland’s top light middleweight, Kildare’s Dennis Hogan [27(7)-1(1)-1] is well placed for a world title fight and is targeting the winner of Jaime Munguia’s WBO title defence versus Liam Smith in Las Vegas on July 21st.
