Irish boxers claim nine medals at Dutch Multi-Nations

Irish fighters claimed nine medals at the Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands over the weekend.

Three golds, four silvers, and two bronze were plundered in Holland from 12 boxers representing the IABA, IATBA, and individual clubs.

For the IABA, Michael Nevin and James McGivern topped the middleweight and lightweight podiums following impressive unanimous decisions over Jaber Dahou of the Netherlands and England’s Cam Shaw.

Kieran Molloy however had to hand Belgian Nabil Messaoudi a walkover in their decider after suffering a cut in his semi-final victory yesterday.

The other Irish gold came from Christina Desmond who, on her return to welterweight, edged England’s Stephanie Wroe on a split to take top prize for Fr Horgan’s.

In the lightweight decision Belfast’s Alanna Nihell was beaten by Russian Olympic bronze medalist Anastasia Beliakova.

Also defeated in the finals was Dean Gardiner who dropped a 4-1 split to England’s Chez Nihell – husband of Alanna – in a close super-heavy final .

For the IATBA Ken Okungbowa, who defeated Dubliner Kirill Afanasev in the semis, was also beaten in the finals on a split-decision today by Rany Hadj Aissa.

Finally another Fr Horgan’s boxer, featherweight Tiegan Russell, picked up bronze yesterday.

Joseph Kelly, Conor Ivors, and Gary McKenna were all eliminated at the quarter final stage.
