Irish Assassins score stoppages in Mexico

Irish professional boxing began 2018 with two stoppages late last night.

It wasn’t the National Stadium or the Odyssey Arena, but the Mexican border-city of Tijuana which played host to the first fights involving Irish boxers

Assassin duo Vladimir Belujsky and JJ McDonagh both made the transatlantic trip and kicked their year’s off with stoppage victories.

First up was Cork super middleweight Belujsky, who blasted Julio Morojo (1-1) out inside a round to move to [2(2)-0-1].

Then, fighting at middleweight for the first time in years, Irish super middleweight champion JJ McDonagh ended his bout with Cristian Aguilar (5-13) in the fourth round.

The fight was McDonagh’s first in a full 14 months dating back to his sensational stoppage win over Jake Ball. The Mullingar man now moves to [15(8)-3(1)] and will have his eyes set on the winner of Ireland’s Last Man Standing in March for the Irish title – which looks set to be vacated by Luke Keeler

There is more Irish action this weekend in Glasgow, with Belfast welterweight Matt Wilton [16(3)-0] and Donegal light welter Shaun McShane [5(0)-4(0)-1] both featuring on a Prospect Boxing card at the Knights of St Columban Social Club.
